A 28-year-old woman who worked at Shelbyville Middle School was arrested Wednesday, accused of drinking and smoking marijuana with high school aged boys.

Bethany Appleton was also charged with several counts of sexual misconduct with a minor, maintaining a common nuisance and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

According to the Shelbyville Police Department, the alleged crimes may have happened between April 2011 and May 2012.  An investigation against Appleton began after Shelbyville Central Schools let the Indiana Department of Child Services know they thought there was possible ‘misconduct.’

A probable cause affidavit filed Wednesday stated Appleton was “having high school aged boys over to her house for pizza and sex.”  It stated there was “kissing and hugging”.  Shelbyville Detectives accused Appleton of having several victims.  The probable cause affidavit also said they “drank alcoholic beverages together” or “would be allowed to smoke marijuana.”

According to Appleton’s biography posted online, she began working with Shelbyville Middle School in the Fall of 2008.  She said she was hired as a Mild Disabilities teacher.

On the website, she wrote: “I have always wanted to be a teacher and am so glad that I have the opportunity to work with so many great teachers and students here at Shelbyville Middle School.  GO GOLDEN BEARS!!!!”

Shelbyville Central Schools Superintendent Dr. David Adams issued the following statement Wednesday:

“SCS holds its teachers to a high standard of conduct and takes these allegations very seriously.  As of 8-6-12, this teacher is no longer an employee of the school corporation.”

Appleton has a court appearance in October.  She has bonded out of jail.
