The first of several planned house demolitions began Tuesday in the Richmond Hill community.

Crews began tearing down a home around 8:45 a.m. They expect to level a total of six homes on Tuesday. Demolition was supposed to begin Monday, but a delay in paperwork forced crews to wait a day.

Code Enforcement plans to demolish a total of 33 homes affected by the south side explosion that killed two people earlier this month. Six additional homes are expected to be torn down next week.

Residents can fight a demolition order if they submit a rebuilding plan certified by an engineer. No one has filed an appeal, officials said. All homeowners have been contacted in person or by email or written notice about the pending demolition.
