Anderson police questioned a man before arresting him in connection with a deadly stabbing.

According to the Anderson Herald Bulletin, detectives questioned Adam E. Layne, 26, around 10 a.m. Monday. Police arrested him on a preliminary murder charge and also arrested Sarah D. Smith, 25, on a preliminary charge of a assisting a criminal. Investigators said Smith is Layne’s girlfriend.

The arrests followed the death of Willie Rumph, 23, after an argument at Layne’s home in the 1600 block of Lincoln Street. Police said Rumph drove himself to St. John’s Medical Center on Sunday afternoon after being stabbed multiple times. A security officer found him outside the emergency room covered in blood.

An ambulance took Rumph to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, where he died in surgery. Investigators said the man provided them with information leading them to Layne before he died.

Police said they found a blood trail leading to the front porch of Layne’s house. They didn’t find him there, but he turned himself in the next morning. Formal charges against Layne are pending.
