An exchange student from Guatemala is accused of raping an 11-year-old girl.

Victor M. Perez, 17, is a non-citizen from Guatemala who can’t speak English. He needed an interpreter during a hearing earlier this week.

Investigators said Perez raped the daughter of the Anderson family he was staying with. The teenager is being charged as an adult.

Prosecutors said the rape happened in September, when the girl went to Perez’s room to watch a movie. According to court documents, he forced himself on the girl.

The case was reported after the girl’s mother noticed a major change in her daughter’s behavior at home.

Police arrested Perez at Anderson High School last week. It’s unclear if Perez is part of a school-sanctioned exchange program.

Other charges against him include criminal deviant conduct and child molestation.

The judge set a cash-only bond, characterizing Perez as a flight risk.
