An Indianapolis man faces four counts of child molesting after investigators say he raped a 12-year-old girl.

Indianapolis Metropolitan police arrested Luke Melton, 31, Wednesday after a three-month investigation into inappropriate contact and sexual assaults. Investigators said the victim told them the abuse started in either early 2009 or 2010 and continued through February 2012.

According to the probable cause affidavit, the girl said Melton snuck into her bedroom on multiple occasions, waking her up by touching or raping her. She said the second or third time it happened, Melton “told her not to tell anybody.” On one occasion, she said Melton left her room after she pushed him away.

The victim didn’t tell anyone about the incidents until September 2012, when she went skating with a cousin and a friend. According to court documents, the conversation turned to boyfriends. The victim said, “just because I haven’t had a boyfriend doesn’t mean nothing has ever happened to me.”

The girl then revealed that Melton had raped her. She started to cry, court documents said, and told her cousin and friend about the abuse and said she didn’t want anything like that to happen to them.

The probable cause affidavit said that the girl’s mother said Melton confessed to inappropriately touching the girl but denied having intercourse. He said he “could not remember the last time he had touched” the girl. The girl’s mother said Melton “had suicidal thoughts” and sought treatment after confessing.

Melton declined to talk to investigators and said he would hire an attorney, according to court documents.

He was being held in the Marion County Jail on $100,000 bond.
