Former New Castle prison guard accused of trafficking drugs with inmates

A former New Castle Correctional Facility employee was arrested Thursday morning on three felonies after police said he was caught entering work carrying what was believed to be heroin and marijuana.

Richard Rice, 47, was charged with trafficking with inmates, a Class C felony; possession of a controlled substance, a Class D felony; and possession of marijuana over 30 grams, a Class D felony.

Rice had been employed as a prison guard at the facility since February 2012.

He was transported to the Henry County Jail and held on a $17,500 bond.

Authorities continue to investigate the incident and said additional charges are possible.
