Greenwood mayor asking YMCA to build facility next to proposed water park

Greenwood residents may have a new place to work out along with a new place to swim.

The Greenwood mayor is asking the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis to build a new facility next to a proposed water park.

Greenwood’s pool was shut down over safety issues last year.

The city is prepared to donate the land for a 50,000 square foot sports and recreation facility in Freedom Park. In exchange, the YMCA would manage the park. The recreation facility could cost as much as $15 million.

The City Council has agreed to build the new aquatic center, which is expected to cost $10 million. Officials believe they have a way to pay for the project without raising prices.
