A Bedford Middle School student is in custody after police said he brought a stolen handgun to school Friday.

According to Principal David Schlegel, another student who saw the handgun reported the incident to his parents when he arrived home.  Schlegel said the parents immediately contacted authorities, who launched a “swift and vigorous investigation” into the report.

“As a result of the brave actions of the reporting student, the immediate response displayed by parents, the aggressive actions of our local law enforcement and the efforts of school personnel, the situation was swiftly resolved without incident,” said Schlegel in a statement to Fox59 News.

With cooperation from the accused student’s guardian, police were able to confirm the report and recover the weapon.

The student was taken into custody and could face criminal charges.
