More firefighters are joining the Indianapolis Fire Department thanks to about $4 million in grant money.

That money means IFD will be able to recruit and hire 30 firefighters over the next two years.

The last time the department had an actual recruiting class was in 2008.

In the last three years alone, the department lost about 100 firefighters due to things like retirement and resignations. This year alone, 37 firefighters are retiring.
