The Indiana Hoosiers Football team has signed the 5th best recruiting class in the Big Ten according to Rivals.com, beating schools like Penn State, Wisconsin (who went to the Rose Bowl this past year) and Iowa. This is not only the highest ranked recruiting class in the Kevin Wilson era, but is arguably the best in IU football history as well.
Since Head Coach Kevin Wilson arrived on the IU campus in December of 2010, the Indiana Hoosiers Football team has been in need of improvement in one area, their defense. During Coach Wilson’s first two seasons, the Hoosiers have ranked last in the Big Ten in both points and total yards allowed despite being 4th in the Big Ten in total offense. In other words, if the Hoosiers are going to have success in the future, they have got to find a way to keep opposing teams out of the endzone. Today, the Hoosiers may have just taken a big step towards that goal with today’s star studded defensive recruiting class.
The Hoosiers welcomed 13 defensive players today out of the 22 total players that signed their letter of intent to join the Hoosier squad this fall. Among the 13 defensive players are three 4 star athletes from right here in the Indianapolis area; Antonio Allen-DB, David Kenney-DE, and Darius Latham-DE. Look for these players to have a good possibility of making an immediate impact as early as this coming fall and help put an end to the defensive struggles.
“We executed our plan very well and are excited about this class,” Wilson said. “We are very fortunate to have a good amount of returning starters, but we have backed that up with, what on paper, is a very, very strong class, which is critical in building our program. There is potential to help on the defensive side, up front, at linebacker and on the perimeter. “We also had tremendous behind the scenes administrative help and support. It was a great team effort that put together what is a very strong class.”
The Hoosiers will begin their 2013 year with their annual spring scrimmage on April 13. They will then open up their 2013 season schedule with five straight home games starting September 1st against Indiana State.
