BROWNSBURG – Like many in Class 4A basketball, Brownsburg has had a single nemesis.

For the past three seasons, Ben Davis has ended the Bulldogs season with defeats in Sectional 11 play, even as the program has enjoyed success under head coach Amy Brauman and North Carolina commit Stephanie Mavunga.

Last season it was in the opening game of the sectional with the previous two years coming in the final-but the semifinal proved luck for Brownsburg.

The Bulldogs used a big night from Stephanie Mavunga to sneak past Ben Davis 40-39 on their home floor Friday night. The victory advances them to the Sectional 11 title game where they will face Pike, who beat Perry Meridian 39-26 in the other semifinal.

Mavunga hit two free throws in the final seconds to help the Bulldogs pull ahead for good to give Brownsburg a chance for their first Sectional championship since the 2000-2001 season.

Pike advanced to the Sectional 11 championship thanks to the efforts of Brittany Ward. The sophomore forward led the Red Devils with 14 points as she helped the team stay ahead of the Falcons for most of the game.

The second half was a low-scoring affair as each team hit just one field goal in the fourth quarter, with Pike’s coming from Ward. But Perry Meridian could never get the lead closer than nine as the Red Devils advance to their first Sectional Final since 2006.

Freshman Tyana Robinson added ten points as Pike improved to 18-4 on the season. The Falcons were led by Katie Kelly who finished with 11 points.
