A family has to deal with the loss of nearly $1 million worth of jewelry after suffering the loss of their mother.

Two weeks ago, family members found two doors open in the back of the home that were supposed to be closed. The home is located off Cold Spring Road.

The homeowners’ brothers were in town, staying at the couple’s home, but were not inside when it happened. They had gone to their mother’s home to clean it up and get some of her belongings. She had passed away the day before. The brothers told detectives they believed every door and window was closed. According to the victims, the doors lock automatically. The alarm was not activated that day. The family is worried someone may have known no one was going to be inside and took advantage.

An IMPD police report stated: “Officers went to the upstairs main bedroom and observed that the jewelry cabinet had been ransacked. (The victim) stated that at this time there is approximately $750,000 to $1,000,000 worth of jewelry that is missing”.

Besides jewelry, an antique .348 caliber Winchester lever action rifle was stolen, iPad’s and computers were stolen.

Jeweler Gary Thrapp, told Fox59 that some of those valuables may be hard to get back. He said it may be difficult to distinguish the pieces unless those pieces have markings.

“My wife and I had a home burglary in the middle 90’s and they caught the fellow, who is still in prison, and it was determined that from the point he stole these things, they had passed through four hands in less than a week,” Thrapp said.

He said he speaks from experience. Most recently,  he was home and shot when robbers got in. He suggested an alarm system and using two vaults.

“You want to get a vault where it’s hidden where your fine things are and you want to get a vault that has some CZ jewelry that you can hand to them and satisfy the event and let them walk out,” Thrapp said.
