A national group supporting Second Amendment gun rights organized rallies at statehouses across the country, including in Indiana, Friday.
The Oath Keepers, which reports having more than 20,000 members, put together the national slate of rallies.
The rally at the Indiana Statehouse is scheduled for 10 a.m.
Group member Brian Dempster drove several hours from southern Indiana to show support for gun ownership rights and to speak out against recent gun control efforts.
“It’s quite obvious that these people are passionate and they feel like they’re doing the right thing,” Dempster said about gun control advocates. “But, unfortunately, every time throughout history that guns are taken off of the streets [and] away from law-abiding citizens, crime rates go up.”
The Oath Keepers is a group consisting of current and former members of the armed forces and various levels of law enforcement and protection. Dempster said published reports are true that many members of the Oath Keepers plan on disobeying certain orders if some of the gun legislation being discussed gets passed.
“There are a number of law enforcement and the military,” he said, “that have gone public and said they will not follow changes that would involve illegal search and seizure of firearms.”
