The Marion Police Department is investigating the death of a 2-year-old girl, who was left in the care of her mother’s boyfriend.
Officers responded to a residence in the 1500 block of South Miller Avenue at approximately 9:45 p.m. Wednesday. When they arrived, they located the unresponsive baby girl in the middle of the living room floor. She was pronounced deceased on the scene.
Police said the child suffered from what appeared to be scalding burns to her face and the front and back of her torso.
The girl and two other children were left in the care of their mother’s boyfriend, 27-year-old Donald Riddle, who had been living in the apartment for the past couple of months. Police said the mother called 911 when she found the baby unresponsive in her bed.
Authorities said Riddle fled the residence prior to the arrival of emergency personnel. He was later located at an acquaintance’s residence early Thursday morning.
Riddle was arrested and charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in death.
The official cause of death for the baby has not been released at this time.
