Nearly 90 cats were rescued from a burning home in Terre Haute Friday. Now, the animals’ futures are up in the air.

The house, which doubled as a cat sanctuary, was destroyed in the fire. The home was not properly permitted, or zoned, to operate in the way it has been.

Property owner Jim Kitchen is hoping for leniency from city codes since the cat rescue he ran was helping ease the “unwanted” cat burden on other shelters.

Because of the fire, Kitchen is now in need of cages, kitty litter, cat food, medicine and money.
