A person was seriously injured in an apartment fire on the city’s west side.

It happened in the 3000 block of Watergate Road, near 34th Street and Moller Road, around 10:15 p.m. Monday.

An Indianapolis Fire Department spokesperson told Fox59 medics transported one person from the apartment to Wishard Hospital in critical condition for treatment to smoke inhalation.

IFD said the fire started as a result of unattended cooking in the kitchen, and thanks to a working smoke in a neighboring apartment nine other residents in three apartments escaped without injury.
