HUNTSVILLE, ALA. — A request to remove an American flag has caused an Internet uproar and a Facebook sharing frenzy.

A soldier and his wife who live at Stepping Stone Condominiums in Huntsville, Ala. said they received a note from the complex Monday evening to remove the flag.  The note said the flag violates the home owners association bylaws, and urged the couple to remove the flag as soon as possible to keep the community tidy.

Lve to see the HOA tell me to REMOVE my Flags.. Semper Fi! The Flag flys everyday, Fought for it, bled for it, and served under her. HOA's should NOT have such a Right.

    • ClanSmokeJaguar

Sorry Dr. D but I have no sympathy for ANYONE who buys into a property managed by an HOA, does not read the covenants, but then complains about it.

HOAs, as the SCOTUS and Indian Supreme Court, has proven has more than enough authority to operate within the confines of the HOA governing documents.

Damn right! we might not where the same uniform, but he does wear the nation’s cloth! I dare anyone to tell me to take my flag’s down! YUT!

  • ReSS

This is what happens when you sign on the dotted line for the HOA. Why in the world people are willing to live with an HOA is just beyond me. They agreed to it, now they're paying for it.

    • ClanSmokeJaguar

The covenants probably stipulate that no flags can be shown or signs outside the voting season.

Why? What if someone decided to fly a pink and purple tella-tubby flag in their yard…while you're trying to sell your home?

The rule is a catch-all for all flags so no one can claim discrimination.

Sorry…again…you sign into an HOA-controlled community you abide by the rules.

      • safety guy

I hate to agree, but you're right. I do think they should either stipulate that other than the US Flag, no other flags can be flown, but I'm sure it doesn't.

      • ClanSmokeJaguar

Or get involved with their HOA. They don't like the rules then they can be changed but it will take a lot of work starting with getting involved.

Having read the accompany article I guarantee the people who put the flag there are even involved with their HOA or attended one of their meetings. Why? Because the people who put the flag there don't even own the condo.

Some people just love to jerk their knees over the slightest little thing.

HOA or not if I’m purchasing a home, and my neighbors fly the AMERICAN FLAG, i’d LOVE IT! it remind’s me of the PEOPLE who fought for it.

I am the flag of the United States of America

    My name is Old Glory.

I fly atop the world’s tallest buildings.

I stand watch in America’s halls of justice.

I fly majestically over great institutes of learning.

I stand guard with the greatest military power in the world.

    Look up! And see me!

I stand for peace, honor, truth, and justice.

    I stand for freedom.

    I am confident . . . I am arrogant.

    I am proud.

When I am flown with my fellow banners,

my head is a little higher,

    my colors a little truer.

    I bow to no one.

I am recognized all over the world.

    I am worshipped.

    I am saluted.

    I am respected.

I am revered. I am loved.

    And I am feared.

I have fought every battle of every war for more than 200 years…

Gettysburg, Shilo, Appomatox, San Juan Hill, the trenches of France,

the Argonne Forest, Anzio, Rome, the beaches of Normandy,

the deserts of Africa, the cane fields of the Philippines,

the rice paddies and jungles of Guam, Okinawa, Japan, Korea, Vietnam,

and a score of places long forgotten by all but those who were with me.

    I was there!

    I led my soldiers.

    I followed them.

    I watched over them…

    They loved me.

I was on a small hill in Iwo Jima.

I was dirty, battle-worn and tired,

    but my soldiers cheered me,

    and I was proud.

I have been soiled, burned, torn and trampled on the streets of countries

    I have helped set free.

It does not hurt . . . for I am invincible.

I have been soiled, burned, torn and trampled on the streets of my country,

and when it is by those with whom I have served in battle . . . it hurts.

    But I shall overcome . . . for I am strong.

I have slipped the bonds of Earth

and stand watch over the uncharted new frontiers of space

from my vantage point on the moon.

I have been a silent witness to all of America’s finest hours.

    But my finest hour comes

when I am torn into strips to be used for bandages

for my wounded comrades on the field of battle.

when I fly at half mast to honor my soldiers…

and when I lie in the trembling arms

of a grieving mother at the graveside of her fallen son.

    I am proud.

    My name is Old Glory.

    Dear God . . . Long may I wave!

  • ReSS

You people don't get it, do you? He AGREED TO THEIR RULES, but now wants to complain about it. Doesn't work that way. He accepted their terms, now he can live with them.

hoa purpose is to keep property from loosing value. some go to far. an american flag is not going to depreciate the value and is stupid from being in there in the first place. sorry to say most people dont read all the fine print .i have heard real doozys in those assc and would hate to have to move in to one but at my age eventually will probably have to with regrets. anyone who fights for our country should have the right to fly the flag

  • Golden Rule

Some HOAs are really over reacting and like to control people because they think they are somebody important or kings of the subdivisions. The American flag represents our country and American people, including those ridiculous HOAs officials who complained about this nonsense issue. It is not any "pink" flag that the HOA was trying to defend; it is such a lame excuse. I think we should get rid of those HOAs; they just do us more harms than good, and will give us lots of headaches. It is NOT worth having them.
