Services at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church resumed Thursday.

Wednesday, a small fire broke out in the 175-year-old church’s sanctuary.  Detectives believe the fire was intentionally set during an attempted burglary.

“Why would someone want to do that to a church? A holy place? I don’t’ know but just like Jesus says, from every evil something good can come out,” said Elizabeth Groves.

“I was just talking to gentlemen in there and they’re looking at the damage and going to make (the church) even better.”

Officials said there weren’t any signs of forced entry and nothing was taken from the church.

Damages have now climbed to $400,000. Most of those damages are smoke-related.
