JOHNSON COUNTY – Indiana State Police have identified the driver of a van who died after a wrong-way crash on I-65 in Johnson County Monday night.

State police said Lee Wayne Oliphant, 67, Indianapolis, was behind the wheel of his Chevrolet Astro van when he ended up going north in the southbound lanes around 10:33 p.m. The van collided with a semi-truck near mile marker 85, erupting into flames on impact.

The Johnson County Coroner’s Office said Oliphant died at the scene.

The driver of the semi, Mark A. Thornberry, 59, Indianapolis, went to an area hospital with minor injuries.

The crash forced police to shut down both north and southbound lanes for several hours while they investigated the crash and removed the wreckage. Hazmat teams arrived to clean up spilled fuel from the wreck.

Northbound lanes reopened at 4 a.m. Southbound lanes opened just before 6 a.m.
