HAMMOND, Ind.– The former pastor of a megachurch in northwest Indiana who admitted to having a sexual relationship with a teenage parishioner allegedly told the girl that Jesus approved of their tryst.
In a sentencing memorandum filed Wednesday, federal prosecutors included letters allegedly written by former First Baptist Church pastor Jack Schapp to the 17-year-old girl.
“That is exactly what Christ desires for us,” read one letter in part. “He wants to marry us [and] become eternal lovers.”
Schapp is awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to charges against him last September. He told a federal judge he first had sex with the girl when she was 16.
Schapp faces at least 10 years in prison. He is expected to be sentenced Thursday.
