An international custody battle is finally over, as the young boy at the center of that fight is returned to his mother, who flew back to Indianapolis with him this weekend. Leo Zagaris, 12, has been in Greece with his father since 2011.

Fox59 has been following the case of Nikos Zagaris for more than a year now.

Zagaris and his wife lived in Noblesville until 2007 when they split up. Nikos was charged with domestic battery and strangulation and fled to Greece with Leo.

Recently, authorities issued an arrest warrant for Zagaris, who was wanted for taking Leo to Greece in August 2011.

Nikos was accused of keeping Leo there, despite not having legal custody of the child.

The boy’s mother, Alissa, had been fighting to get her son back home.

In December, a Greek court upheld a ruling that the boy must be returned to the U.S.

Saturday night, Leo and his mother arrived at Indianapolis International Airport after Alissa flew to Greece to get him back.

“We went straight to Athens,” Alissa said. “The embassy picked me up at the airport, we went directly to go get Leo.”

“The police came out, and took me by the hand, and put me into a car with my father,” said Leo.

“He was waiting there, a little bit freaked out, and very surprised,” said Alissa. “Nick agreed to the release, he cooperated and he went home.”

“I’m glad (to be home),” Leo said.  “I feel great.”

“Honestly, I haven’t really stopped crying,” Alissa said. “Today’s the day I finally go from victim to advocate, and I am very happy about that.”
