A runaway horse tied up traffic along Interstate 80 in Lake County Tuesday.

Geraldo jumped over the fence of his home at 25th and Colorado and ran on to the interstate. The equine continued eastbound but then fell.

Two passersby stopped their vehicles and laid down next to the horse to keep him calm and to prevent him from running back on to the busy roadway.

A state trooper stopped traffic to walk the horse back over the interstate. Geraldo suffered minor abrasions but was safely loaded into a horse trailer.

Police credit the passerbys with saving the horse’s life and the lives of many drivers.

All traffic lanes were reopened shortly after 6 p.m.
