Imagine going out for lunch, eating, paying your bill and then finding out the place where you at added more to your bill – without you knowing. A woman said that was exactly what happened to her at a West Lafayette restaurant. Experts said it could be happening to you too.
Pat Stankard did a double-take when saw her bank statement.
“I thought, ‘Why did they do this and change it?’ It is not the honest thing to do,” said Stankard.
The amount she thought she paid for lunch did not match what she actually paid. She said it happened more than once.
“When it happened two more times in the past two months, that is when it really upset me that this is probably something that is happening all the time and you just do not realize it,” said Stankard.
She wrote the tip and final amount on both receipts, then she left. She said her server then came back and added more to the tip and charged her more.
“I am sure there are a lot of other people that this happens to,” said Stankard. “It is not going to break me, but it is just the dishonesty of it all that really irks me.”
Bill Thomas, with the Better Business Bureau said it happens more than we think.
“There is no doubt about it,” said Thomas. “Not every time something like this happens to a consumer do they come to the BBB. If it is a small amount like that they may chalk it up to a lesson learned.”
Thomas said there is really only one way you can make sure it does not happen to you: save your receipt and check your statement.
“The documentation is there for you to keep and for you to do your checks and balances,” said Thomas.
Stankard said she was glad she caught what was going on before she lost even more money. She said the lesson she learned was you can not let your guard down, not even at lunch.
“I just do not see why people have to do that nowadays,” said Stankard. “I know times are tight, but you still do not steal from somebody like that.”
Thomas said in most cases the restaurants do not even know it is going on, it is usually a server trying to make an extra buck. Thomas said if the restaurant does not make it right, the Better Business Bureau will.
