SPEEDWAY, Ind.—An Indianapolis man was arrested after police said he forced his way into a home his wife was staying at and attacked someone with a hatchet and a hammer.

Obed Nyarenchi, 26, was arrested on attempted murder and burglary charges.

Authorities said Nyarenchi forced entry into a residence in Speedway, where his wife was studying with friends.  Speedway police said the female students hid in a bathroom and the basement, while a male student attempted to keep Nyarenchi contained in the living room until police arrived.

Police said during an altercation, Nyarenchi hit Abhigya Singh with a hatchet and a hammer, causing serious bodily injury. Nyarenchi then fled the scene before police arrived.

Illinois State Police later located a vehicle matching the description released by Speedway police.  Nyarenchi’s vehicle was located on Interstate 70, just east of IL SR1.  Authorities found Nyarenchi inside the vehicle unconscious.  He was transported to Regional Hospital in Terre Haute and later transported to Wishard Hospital in Indianapolis.

His condition is unknown at this time.
