HENDRICKS COUNTY – Indiana State Police arrested an Indianapolis woman accused of stealing nearly $200,000 from area tanning salons.

The three-month investigation started after the woman’s employer, TABS Distribution, noticed something amiss with its deposits. The company operates four Sun Spots tanning salons in Avon, Brownsburg, Danville and Plainfield. Deposits made to the bank by the office manager, 30-year-old Katherine Schiewer, did not match up with the money she’d received from the salons.

A company audit suspected that Schiewer deposited $198,955.80 of the salons’ money into her personal account. State police said the thefts started in 2008, when Schiewer was promoted to office manager, putting her in charge of weekly deposits from the salons.

Investigators said she used some of the money to pay for vacations in Florida and Las Vegas. She also used it to pay for Lasik surgery and shopping trips, state police said. Police arrested her Friday without incident.

Schiewer faces felony theft charges.
