A 16-year-old climbed through a window to escape a fire on the city’s southeast side Sunday.

Firefighters were called to the 1000 block of Riley Place just after 1 p.m.

The teen told investigators she was home alone when she heard the smoke alarm go off upstairs. She climbed up the stairs and saw heavy smoke. She then climbed out of a nearby window.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire in about 15 minutes.

The teen suffered minor cuts from hanging out of the window.

Investigators say the origin was a mattress in the hallway. Damages are estimated at $35,000.
