JOHNSON CO., Ind.—An Indianapolis man who was walking to meet his girlfriend was killed late Wednesday night after being struck by a vehicle on Interstate 65.

Police said Cody Small, 21, got off work and called his girlfriend to pick him up.  Small started walking on I-65 near the Whiteland Exit to meet her, when he was struck by a 2009 Volkswagen driven by 29-year-old Natalie Richards.

Small was pronounced deceased on the scene at approximately 11:50 p.m.  Richards was not injured in the crash.

Investigators believe Small was attempting to cross the interstate to be on the southbound lanes so that his girlfriend would be able to see him.

Witnesses told authorities Richards made an evasive maneuver in an attempt to avoid hitting Small.  Authorities said drugs or alcohol are not believed to be factors in the crash.
