Boy, 12, killed after accidental shooting in Randolph Co.

MODOC – A 12-year-old Randolph County boy died after an accidental shooting over the weekend.

According to the Randolph County Sheriff’s Department, the incident happened just before 10 p.m. on Saturday at a home in the 4800 block of South 500 West in rural Modoc.

Emergency personnel arrived to find the child with a gunshot wound to the chest. According to deputies, Mitchell A. Gilliland said he was placing a rifle in a gun cabinet when the firearm went off. Deputies started CPR on the victim until emergency crews arrived.

The boy was taken to a Winchester hospital. He later died from his injuries.

The preliminary investigation from the sheriff’s department and the Randolph County coroner indicated that the shooting was accidental in nature.
