Family members waiting on the tarmac could hardly believe this day had really come Tuesday. The day Maddie Ross finally came home.

Fox59 first told you about the Fishers girl who lives with spina bifida and cerebral palsy last week. She became seriously ill with pneumonia while the family was vacationing in Florida.

After weeks in the hospital, they faced the gut wrenching financial decision of having to leave her behind at a nursing home or to return home.

A medical flight program called Grace on Wings offered to fly Maddie home if the family could raise the $10,000 needed to pay for fuel.

The family said after Maddie’s story aired, the donations flooded in.

“The prayers and thoughts and donations that have been coming in are truly overwhelming and very appreciated,” said Steve Ross, Maddie’s father.

Maddie arrived safely at Indianapolis International Airport with her grateful mom and stepfather on board Tuesday.

The family calls their ordeal stressful, scary, but ultimately rewarding.

“I can’t express the thanks, the generosity of Hoosiers, Kentucky , Georgia, Florida- it’s been awesome,” David Strauss, Maddie’s stepfather.

Those who cared for her on the flight couldn’t help but talk about how her story had touched so many who heard it.

“Between Indiana and Florida, all the people who stepped up- it was amazing. The power of the media when it works for good is just amazing,” said Hal Blank with Grace on Wings.

Maddie will now continue her recovery at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health. It’s a recovery now aided with the prayers and good wishes of those who don’t even know her.
