Police are investigating after a father was shot and killed inside his apartment just one day after his birthday.

Detectives said Jimmy Fesler, 37, was killed inside his home in the 1000 block of Hosbrook Street just north of Fountain Square around 3 a.m. Friday. Fessler was shot once in the head and once in the neck.

Witnesses heard a disturbance and then heard gunshots in the area. There were a number of children at the home because the victim’s birthday was the day before.

“We’re trying to determine who was involved, what people saw, and what they heard,” said IMPD Lt. Christopher Wilburn.

A family friend of the victim described him as a happy-go-lucky man.

“(The suspect) took a young man’s life and now there’s a 12-year-old boy that (doesn’t) have his daddy with him and that man that did this is going to spend the rest of his life in jail for it,” Joe Pattison said.

Pattison said he has known the victim for several years.

“I knew him since he was 13, 14 years old. (He was the) best man in the world. (He would) do anything for anybody,” Pattison said.

Rachel Cooper, the president of the Southeast Community Organization, knew the victim and his family. She said the victim’s son was in town, celebrating their birthdays.

“It’s sad that the son was actually here spending the week with him to celebrate both of (their) birthdays,” Cooper said.

Cooper is shocked about the shooting.

“It’s really sad to see another (young man) growing up without a parent. That’s what hurts me so much,” Cooper said.

The family wants answers and justice.

“He went to church every now and then. He was just loved by everybody, did everything for everybody and I hate to see a good man gone. There’s going to be a lot of people hurt over this,” Pattison said.

If anyone has any information about the case, they should contact the police department.
