A large hog farm will be built near a popular YMCA camp despite public outcry.

The White County Commission voted unanimously to approve the request for a farm right next to Camp Tecumseh.

Farmer Mark Erickson had sought new zoning so he could house up to 10,000 hogs in two buildings less than a mile from the camp.

Opponents had argued the farm’s close proximity to the camp would negatively impact the campers. Erickson countered saying the farm would have zero effect on Camp Tecumseh.

The camp attracts more than 35,000 campers each year.
