CONNERSVILLE, Ind.– A Connersville man was killed and two firefighters were injured following an apartment fire late Tuesday.

Crews responded to the Turtle Creek apartments at approximately 11:15 p.m.

Connersville Fire Chief Troy Tipton said 39-year-old Darryl Spurlock was found in the hallway, where he had apparently tried to get out of the building.

Tipton said one firefighter sustained injuries after a ladder malfunctioned and he fell from the third floor. The other firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation. Both were transported to Fayette Regional Care and released.

The chief said the fire started on the second floor and three or four units have fire damage while about 12 others have smoke damage.

Crews are still investigating the cause of the fire, but Tipton said it looks to be accidental.
