A family of six and their pets, including an alligator, escaped a house fire Monday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to the 8000 block of Sweet Birch Drive just after 3 p.m.

When they arrived, flames and heavy smoke were seen inside the home.

The homeowners told firefighters they though something electrical on the exterior caught fire.

One woman suffered smoke inhalation after re-entering the home to save two dogs and an alligator.

The Indianapolis Fire Department would like to remind residents to never re-enter a burning structure for pets or other items.  The possibility of being overcome by smoke or becoming trapped is a risk too great to take and occupants should simply evacuate and call 911.

Damages are estimated at $75,000.
