As the Indiana State Fair Commission unveiled the newly completed Youth Arena, project managers allowed Fox 59 News into the Coliseum for a behind-the-scenes tour of the construction.
Project managers said the Coliseum remains on schedule to open in time to host graduation ceremonies in the spring of 2014.
“As it stands today, we have about five (or) six generations of people that have used this building as part of their family and in the next 75 years we’re going to have another six (or) seven generations that are able to fully hold memories in here,” said Director of Advancement Justin Armstrong.
Next to the Coliseum, which Armstrong said remains on budget, is the brand new Youth Arena. The 30,000-square foot space will host agricultural events during the 2013 Indiana State Fair that had been held in the Coliseum in the past.
“It was (an) absolute monumental feat that we have this Youth Arena built and that we built it in a year,” Armstrong. “So essentially it’s able to stand in for the Coliseum at this year’s fair.”
During each of the 17 days of the 2013 fair, the public is invited to take tours of the Coliseum, which was built in 1939. The tours run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
