A Hoosier hero got a special birthday surprise on Saturday afternoon.

World War II Veteran Thomas Strawn was honored at Mayor Ballard’s annual Veteran’s Appreciation Day.

Strawn, who served in the Navy, turns 100 years old this weekend and as part of the celebration, he was presented with hundreds of cards and packages, from people all over the area.

Now that Strawn has hit the triple digits, he’s got a new goal in mind.

“My mom lives to 100 and 2 months. My sister lived to 100 and 4 months. My goal is to be 100 and 6 months. Which means I have to live til February,” Strawn told Fox59.

Today’s event was not only about honoring veterans but helping them as well.

There was also a career fair and a benefits fair as well.
