FRANKLIN – A Franklin man died after jumping out of the bed of a moving pickup truck early Friday morning. Two people were arrested in connection with the incident.

According to Johnson County Sheriff Doug Cox, Joshua Hewett was in the back of the truck and told the others he wanted to jump off; they’d just picked him up from a bar. He leapt off near Greensburg Road and County Road 450 East.

When the driver and passenger in the cab looked back, they didn’t see Hewett anymore. They went looking for him and found him dead, Cox said.

Jeffrey Kern and Dana McKie were arrested on preliminary charges of driving under the influence. A breathalyzer test put McKie’s blood alcohol content at 0.08; Kern refused a breath test and police obtained a warrant for a blood draw. Those results are pending.

Cox said investigators believe both McKie and Kern were driving at various times during the incident.
