INDIANAPOLIS – Two people were seriously hurt in a crash Friday morning that police say may have involved drugs or alcohol.

Just before 10:40 a.m., emergency crews responded to a crash in the 1800 block of North Franklin Road. A blue Volvo 940 going north ran off the road and hit a concrete storm drain culvert. Both the driver and the passenger were trapped inside the vehicle.

Crews from the Indianapolis Fire Department had to extricate both people. Both were taken in critical condition to IU Health Methodist Hospital. Police said the passenger suffered head injuries; officers recognized the female driver from a previous run earlier in the morning.

Police said drugs or alcohol may have been a contributing factor to the crash. The Fatal Alcohol Crash Team was notified to take over the investigation.
