INDIANAPOLIS – A former teacher at the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired had sex with a student at a conference and fondled her on several occasions, court documents say.
The encounters led to the firing of 60-year-old Al Lovati, who faces seven counts including sexual misconduct with a minor, child seduction and official misconduct.
According to the probable cause affidavit, Lovati engaged in sex acts with a student who was at least 14 years old but younger than 16. The investigation began following a Sept. 17 incident in which a student saw the girl fondle Lovati in a car. Lovati and the girl were with other students on their way to a Lions Club presentation in Zionsville. The day after the incident, the school became aware of the allegations and fired Lovati.
The sex acts involving Lovati and the girl occurred between August 2012 and March 2013, court documents said. The girl told detectives she and the teacher had sex at a conference in Florida in July and engaged in other sex acts after school was out.
The girl said Lovati never forced himself on her and they “always talked about these experiences before they did them.” She told detectives that Lovati was “very nice to her and they had many long talks about everything in life.” She also said she and Lovati decided they would tell the truth if they were ever caught, court documents said.
A hearing for Lovati is set for Oct. 30.
