Dozens of kids got a lesson in reading from a few local celebrities.

Fox 59’s Ron Smiley and Bill Remeika were among the many who volunteered to help the United Way’s ReadUP Day in partnership with Indianapolis Public Schools.

ReadUP Day is a time when community members help kids who struggle with reading and comprehension.

“It only takes 30 hours over the course of an entire school year to change a child’s life. And there can be nothing more rewarding than sitting with a child and helping them understand the value of reading,” said Ann Murtlow, president and CEO of the United Way of Central Indiana.

ReadUP Day is a partnership with 18 IPS schools, but the United Way wants to expand it to other districts.

The program needs tutors, too. Currently, there are about 925 tutors, but the United Way needs about 1,200. For information on how to volunteer, visit the United Way of Central Indiana’s website.
