Bicyclist struck, officer injured in hit and run on near east side

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – A bicyclist and a police officer were injured in a hit and run on the city’s near east side Wednesday morning.

The accident occurred around 1:30 a.m. at the intersection of E 10th St and Rural St.

A minivan hit a man on his bike and fled the scene.

When police arrived at the corner of 10th and Rural they found the bike rider badly injured.

He was transported to the hospital in “bad shape” according to one IMPD officer.

About a minute later, the minivan involved in the accident ran a red light down the road from the accident.

An officer began pursuing the minivan for this traffic violation.

The driver led police on a short pursuit before the suspect ran into a concrete block, flipping his vehicle.

The driver left his minivan and began to run on foot.

Police chased the man, and arrested him.

Police believe the suspect was under the influence of alcohol, and the FACT team was called to the scene.

An officer was also injured during the pursuit.

He rolled his ankle and was transported to a hospital to be checked out.

The suspect was also transported to a hospital for injuries related to the minivan crash.
