INDIANAPOLIS (Oct. 18, 2013) – Gov. Mike Pence already declared Sunday “Welcome Back #18 Day” in honor Peyton Manning’s return.
In his message, he thanked Manning for his on-field prowess and philanthropy and welcomed him back to Indianapolis “even though the Colts will hand the Broncos their first defeat this season.”
Now, Pence is putting his money where his mouth is. Or, at least, he’s putting Indiana agricultural products where his Twitter account is. Pence exchanged tweets with Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper on Friday. Pence noted that Denver hadn’t won the Super Bowl since 1998-1999–Manning’s rookie year. A little gubernatorial Twitter trash-talking ensued–mostly jovial–with Hickenlooper tweeting back that the Broncos now had #18 and that the team was “firing on all cylinders.”
The governors mutually decided to place a friendly wager on the game, with Pence offering up Indiana agricultural products if the Colts lose and Hickenlooper reciprocating with Colorado ag products if the Broncos lose.
“Looking forward to sharing some CO ag products w/Hoosiers, Governor! We have Luck on our side,” Pence tweeted.
“We have #18 and he’s awesome. Oh, and #58 is back, too. You’ll like seeing him,” Hickenlooper tweeted back, with the latter number referring to the return of Broncos star pass rusher Von Miller. Miller missed the first six games of the NFL season due to a suspension for violating the league’s drug abuse policy.
