The wife of fallen IMPD officer Rod Bradway accepted a posthumous award on her husband’s behalf Wednesday, praising the officer for responding to the domestic violence call that would ultimately claim his life.
Officials from the Indiana Coalition against Domestic Violence presented Jamie Bradway with the award, a little more than a month after her husband was shot and killed in the line of duty.
“It’s an honor to accept this award for him,” Bradway said. “Having him honored was just as much an honor to me.”
“It was obvious officer Bradway deserved the award posthumously, so we invited his wife to come and accept that,” said Laura Berry, ICADV executive director.
“We are getting thru this a day at a time, sometimes an hour at a time,” said Bradway in her first on-camera television interview since the shooting. “Sometimes I make it a few minutes at a time.”
Bradway told Fox59 that if her husband had a chance to do it all over again, she thinks he’d do things exactly the same, to protect the victim he was there to help.
Bradway was killed in the early morning hours of Sept. 20 after responding to a domestic disturbance on the city’s northwest side.
Authorities said Bradway was “ambushed” as he entered a unit at the Eagle Pointe Apartments. According to police, the suspect, 24-year-old Steven Byrdo, fired at least six shots at the officer. Officer Bradway was able to return fire, fatally striking Byrdo, said police.
