PIKE COUNTY, Ind.—A Pike County man was arrested Tuesday night after police said he fatally shot his ex-girlfriend while their 3-year-old daughter was in the house.

Christopher Morton, 32, was arrested on a charge of murder.

Police responded to a house in the 100 block of South Bluff Street in Winslow, Ind. around 11 p.m. after receiving reports of shots fired. When they arrived, police said troopers found Morton standing in the kitchen, holding a gun in one hand and a beer can in the other. A trooper used a stun gun to subdue Morton, after he refused to drop his weapon and he was taken into custody without further incident.

After searching the home, police located 24-year-old Kelsie McDonald, who was unconscious and suffering from a gunshot wound. She was transported to Jasper Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Morton was transported to the Pike County Jail, where he is being held without bond.

The 3-year-old girl was not harmed in the incident, and she was placed into the custody of family members.
