MUNCIE, Ind. (Nov. 15, 2013)– Ball State University police have said they are investigating reports of someone on campus who could be armed.

An alert on BSU’s website says, “Possible armed assailant in the area of Rec and Wellness. Avoid HP, Lewellen, Rec Center, HP, and Worthen Arena. This is all we have at this time. Updates will be emailed to this address.”

There were also reports that this may be a hostage situation, but Ball State said those reports were inaccurate. Students and staff are being urged to stay in a safe place until the alert is lifted. There were several social media reports of an explosion near the secured perimeter; the college said there was no explosion but a service weapon was “accidentally discharged.”
