LAFAYETTE – The Tippecanoe School Corporation will get a reprieve after students lost time because of tornado damage.

The Indiana Department of Education approved the district’s request to waive instructional time lost after a tornado hit last week, damaging Southwestern Middle School and Mintonye Elementary School. Students missed class from Nov. 18 through Nov. 22.

The tornado caused structural damage at both schools. Downed power lines caused electrical outages while downed trees blocked roads. The entire school district was closed on Nov. 18. Woodland Elementary School had to close for an additional day until power could be restored. Southwestern and Mintonye students were out of school for the entire week, but students received instructions packets in an effort to keep up with schoolwork.

Because of the school’s request for a waiver was granted, students won’t have to make up the days they missed.

The school calendar includes President’s Day on Feb. 17 as a makeup day. That schedule will hold unless the district misses school for another reason.
