INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Jan. 28, 2014) — While several retailers are suffering from a lack of foot traffic during this extended, bitter cold, home service providers are experiencing a bittersweet bump in their bottom lines.

Industries seeing an increase include home heating repair, home contractors and plumbers.

Jack Hope, owner of Indianapolis-based Hope Plumbing, said his business, as well as his competitors’ companies, has gotten so many calls that his staff is backed up for days.

“We’ve done everything we can to try to prevent this from happening for people,” Hope said, referring to pushing out prevention tips on his company’s social media accounts.  “But when it does, we try to be sympathetic and get out there as quickly as possible and get ’em fixed up.  We know it’s not pleasant for anyone.”

Hope told FOX59 News many of the calls are more severe this year to match the severity of the weather.

“We’ve got quite a bit going on with the cold weather, as you can imagine.  The freezing pipes, rather the freezing weather is just very hard on lines in general.”

In fact, Hope said he can’t remember a time when his company was busier.

“I’ve been doing this for about 10 years and never experienced anything even close to the kinds of calls we have been getting in the last week,” he said.  “[E]ven talking to some of the guys that have been around a little bit longer than I have, they have similar thoughts.  They just don’t remember a time when it was this cold for this long, resulting in so many problems.”
