INDIANAPOLIS – The rivalry wasn’t just for bragging rights anymore.

The winner of the Indianapolis southside showdown between Perry Meridian and Southport would have at the very least a share of the Conference Indiana lead before the night was done. The Cardinals came in with a 3-1 conference record, a half game ahead of the Falcons and Columbus North.

Southport made sure they would have sole possession of first for at least one more night with a solid performance on the road at Perry Meridian, besting their rivals 71-57 on Friday evening. With a 4-1 conference record, the Cardinals now lead the conference by a game over Columbus North and a game-and-a-half over the Falcons.

At 9-7 overall it also continues an incredible turnaround for the Southport basketball program, which won just a single game in 20 tries last season under first year head coach Kyle Simpson. In his second year, the Cardinals already have their most wins in a season in three years.
