Hamilton Co. sheriff’s chaplain dies after battle with cancer

HAMILTON COUNTY (March 3, 2014) – Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office Senior Chaplain Tom Burton died on March 1 after a long battle with cancer.

He was commissioned in 1992 to organize and train the Chaplaincy Department for the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office. As senior chaplain, he managed the spiritual well-being of employees and inmates. He also trained volunteers, started Bible studies and conducted worship services.

In addition to his work with the Sheriff’s Office, Burton started and pastored Christ Community Church of Hamilton County. He was instrumental in the development of a Spiritual Response Team for Hamilton County and served on the National American Red Cross Spiritual Response Team, the International Conference of Police Chaplains Disaster Response Team and the Indiana Crisis Area Response Team. He also served  on the Hamilton County Mental Health Board, the Noblesville Mayor’s Advisory Board and the Riverview Hospital Chaplain’s Advisory Board.
