INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (March 11, 2014)– A toddler has been shot on the city’s east side, police dispatchers confirm.

The shooting occurred in the 2100 block of Mitthoeffer Rd. just after 6 p.m. Tuesday.

When officers arrived, they found a 3-year-old girl suffering from a gunshot wound to the hand.  The girl was immediately transported by EMS crews to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health in good condition.

Detectives interviewed the father of the child who told detectives that the girl had retrieved the firearm from the couch area and shot herself accidentally.  The dad and the child were the only individuals in the apartment at the time of the shooting.

Based on the physical evidence, detectives were able corroborate the dad’s version of events and currently have not made an arrest in this incident.  Representatives from Child Protective Services have been notified. The investigation is ongoing.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department reminds residents to ensure that they properly secure personally owned firearms, do not make firearms easily accessible and be aware of children and their proximity to any firearms at all times
