INDIANAPOLIS (March 14, 2014) – One person was found dead after a Friday morning fire on the west side.

According to the Indianapolis Fire Department, crews found a body inside the building at Harding and Pruitt. IFD had originally said the building, a convenience and candy store called Cuz and Cuz, was believed to be vacant.

According to IFD, 17 units were dispatched to the scene. Crews had the fire under control in about 45 minutes. Three firefighters were hurt; one suffered a knee injury and went to IU Health Methodist Hospital while two others were treated for steam burns on their wrists.

Crews tried to get into the building once, but were rebuffed. They gained access after a second attempt and found the remains of a man in his 50s. Investigators have not yet released his name, but family members at the scene fear their loved one was in the building. The Marion County coroner will make positive identification.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
